
Treat Cultivation as Manufacturing
Cultivation is manufacturing conducted through a biological process. Direct materials, direct labor, indirect production costs, work in process and finished goods all apply exactly as they would on a factory floor, and the harvest batch is the natural cost object to build around.
Once cost attaches cleanly to harvest lots, everything downstream becomes possible: real unit cost, margin by strain, yield variance analysis and a defensible inventory value on the balance sheet.
Building the Cost Model
Capture direct materials — nutrients, growing media, amendments, consumables — by batch as they are used. Capture direct labor through activity-coded time tracking rather than a flat hourly rate applied across the whole crew. Allocate indirect production costs on a documented basis such as canopy square footage, plant count or metered utility usage.
Revisit the allocation study any time grow rooms are added, repurposed or taken offline, and keep each prior version on file tied to the period it applied to.

- Facility and equipment depreciation split between production and non-production space
Work in Process on the Balance Sheet
Plants in veg or flower carry accumulated cost that belongs on the balance sheet, not as a hit to the current period's income statement. Roll work-in-process cost forward each period and transfer it to finished goods once curing is complete.
This single discipline eliminates the phantom-loss and phantom-profit swings that otherwise make cultivation financials unusable for management review or lending purposes.
Measuring Yield and Variance
Track grams per square foot and per light, wet-to-dry conversion ratios, dry-to-saleable conversion after trim, and waste broken out by cause. Break each of these down by room, strain and cycle.
Persistent variance almost always traces back to a specific room, strain or crew, and the financial impact shows up clearly once it's expressed in cost per pound.
Putting Cost Per Pound to Work
A trustworthy cost-per-pound number answers pricing questions directly, shows whether a given strain is earning its canopy space, sizes the impact of a lighting or nutrient change before it's made, and marks the floor below which chasing wholesale volume actually destroys value.
In a market experiencing sustained price compression across New Mexico wholesale channels, an operator without that number is managing entirely blind.
